Prentice Park is one of Fernie’s longest-running community recreation spaces. It began as Fernie’s original golf course site in 1918, when local residents formed the Fernie Golf Club and built a nine-hole course at the north end of town, just south of a Great Northern Railway spur line. Over time, as golf shifted away from the original layout, the open north-end field became widely used for community sports—often referred to as the Northend Grounds. In 1972, Crows Nest Industries formally transferred the Northend Grounds to the City for perpetual playground and recreation use, and the park was dedicated as Prentice Park in honour of retiring Crows Nest president William (“Bill”) Prentice, marked by the boulder and plaque that remain on site today.
